![]() The group, which included Otto Wagner, Koloman Moser, Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann, among others, wanted to embrace a more international approach to design and collaboration. A small group of influential architects, painters, sculptors, and designers resigned from the Association to develop an organization that they felt responded to the coming wave of Modern ideas, the Vienna Secession. They felt that the leading organization, the Association of Austrian Artists, was not responding to new trends in art and culture and that their steadfast commitment to traditional, Academic styles was outdated. In the late 1890s, many Austrian artists had grown fed up with local aesthetic culture. The Vienna Secession & Changing Aesthetics This pitcher, designed by Koloman Moser, is a stunning example of their forward-thinking and the design still feels relevant today. The Vienna Secession was the first group ofĪrtists within Vienna creating modern works for all aspects of life. In 1897, he was hired by Otto Wagner’s architectural firm, and through this connection became involved with a movement Wagner was starting with Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser, the Society of Austrian Fine Artists, or more famously known as the Vienna Secession. ![]() Instead, he ended up at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and eventually settled into teaching at what is now the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Josef Hoffmann was born in Austria, in 1870 to a middle-class family that had hoped he would become an attorney or doctor. I was browsing the Crate & Barrel website when I came across several items that instantly reminded me of a designer, and his associated organizations and movements, popular over a century ago: Josef Hoffmann. ![]() I had grown tired of sitting in the same one, day after day, and like many others during the pandemic, decided it was time for a bit of redecorating. I was recently searching for a new accent chair for our living room. The striking geometric design is timeless. These hand-crafted tumblers, from renowned glassware company Lobmeyr, were designed by Josef Hoffmann in 1912.
